A Score-O is an event where participants "choose their own" adventure to find as many controls as they can in a given time. Controls can be collected in any order. Harder controls may be worth more points, but going over the time limit will cost you!

There will be controls placed in easy-to-find locations throughout the park along with several harder controls hidden off-trail for the more adventurous participants! Participants can visit controls in any order and do not need to visit every control. This will be a mass start event with all participants starting at the same time!

Scoring: One point is awarded for each control visited regardless of difficulty and/or distance from the start area. For participants who return to the finish area after their time limit expires, one penalty point is deducted per minute late.

Bonus “Poker” Scoring: Teams/individuals will be dealt five (5) playing cards at registration. There will be one playing card affixed to each control. Using the provided poker hand ranking chart, participants will decide at each control whether or not to exchange one of the cards in their hand with the one attached to the control in order to improve their hand. (Important: If you remove the card from the control you must replace it with one from your hand!) The goal is to make the best five-card poker hand possible. The better the hand you return to the finish with, the higher the bonus!

COURSES

• One course: Poker-O
• Type: Score-O (random order)
• Time Limit: 90 minutes
• Start: 12:00 (noon) or shortly thereafter
• Course closure: 1:30pm
• Terrain: Mixed trails and forest
• Scoring: 1 points for each control regardless of location; 1 point penalty per minute over-time. Bonus points based on poker hand.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

Pre-registration is required to help the organizers prepare sufficient material. Register here or by email with the organizer (sh@orienteeringnb.ca).

  • Name(s) of all Participants with Birth Year (for our insurer)
  • Team Name (optional)
  • Club/Organization (ONB, 1st Somewhere Scouts, etc)
  • Course: Score-O
  • SportIdent serial number (if available)

• In order to reduce congestion at the registration area, please print and pre-fill the paperwork required by our insurers:
  • ONB Event Registration Form (everyone on same form)
  • Link to online Waiver (one per participant, all ages, once per year)
  • or print Waiver (for each Adult) or Assumption of Risk (for each minor) (once a year)
  Please scan and email to the organizer. Limited copies will be available on-site.

MEET FEES:

Registration Fees will be collected at the meet site or by Interac e-Transfer® to: sh@orienteeringnb.ca. On-site registration will be available from approximately 11:00am.

(Pre-registration for meets is recommended.)

What should I bring?

• This is a time limited event, so a watch or other time source is required.
• Compass and whistle are mandatory for all ONB events (whistles may be available for sale at registration).
• Dress for the weather but wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! You might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! If it's wet, you might need a complete change of clothes!
